AUSTRALIAN Red Cross Lifeblood received a welcome boost this week when GMHBA staff rolled up their sleeves to support the annual Health Services Blood Drive at Geelong’s Lifeblood Donor Centre.<\/p>\n

The nationwide appeal, running from April 1 to June 30, aims to collect over 10,520 donations, with healthcare workers participating to receive a limited-edition bandage designed by Melbourne artist Lisa Gorman.<\/p>\n

Dental assistant Megan Buchmasser eagerly participated, noting the importance of blood donations.<\/p>\n

“I decided to take part because I’ve learned how essential blood donations are in saving lives and supporting medical needs,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It’s something meaningful I can do for others who are facing health challenges. GMHBA allocating time during work to complete this really helps in showing up and getting it done.”<\/p>\n

Although nervous about her first time donating, Buchmasser expressed determination.<\/p>\n

“I’m a bit nervous, knowing the positive impact I could have on someone’s life gives me courage and excitement to push past my nerves and contribute.”<\/p>\n

“It’s important to me because it’s a tangible way to help.”<\/p>\n

In Geelong alone, there is a daily need for 100 blood and plasma donations to meet local demand, with each donation potentially saving three lives.<\/p>\n

GMHBA chief executive officer David Greig, who was also rolling up his sleeve, stressed the critical need for donations.<\/p>\n

“Working in health services, we unfortunately hear too often about people who need blood products to survive, whether it’s in an emergency situation or to support ongoing care for chronic health conditions,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We are really happy to support our staff to visit their local donor centre by providing leave and promoting the benefits of their contribution internally.”<\/p>\n

The GMHBA Lifeblood Team, comprising employees from multiple locations including Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Warrnambool, and Portland, promotes regular blood and plasma donations among staff.<\/p>\n

Lifeblood spokesperson Stephanie Reynolds highlighted the impact of these donations.<\/p>\n

“People with cancer or blood disorders, trauma victims, surgery patients and women in childbirth are among those who require blood every day,” Stephanie said.<\/p>\n

“That’s why we are incredibly grateful for every donation.<\/p>\n
