Geelong Lutheran College (GLC) continues to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, which plays an important role inspiring students to be lifelong learners and creative global citizens.<\/p>\n

GLC executive principal Sue Ellis remains passionate about the role STEM education plays in developing courageous and inquisitive students at GLC.<\/p>\n

“In our ever-changing world, a firm understanding of STEM has never been more important to the future pathways of all students who walk through our gates, whether it be at GLC St John’s Newtown or GLC Armstrong Creek,” Ms Ellis said.<\/p>\n

GLC is implementing the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Program (PYP) for primary students to undertake transdisciplinary units of inquiry, including Mathematics, Science, and Technologies (Digital and Design).<\/p>\n

Students participate in STEM specialist lessons each week, exploring subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Robotics, and Coding.<\/p>\n

“Our STEM classes promote problem solving and team-working skills in our Primary students, by encouraging collaboration and creativity,”<\/p>\n

Ms Ellis said.<\/p>\n

“This provides them with a strong foundation to commence their Secondary years at GLC Armstrong Creek.”<\/p>\n

GLC students participate in STEM specialist lessons each week.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Maths and Science are core subjects for all students at GLC, with additional rotational and elective subjects taught in Years 7 to 10.<\/p>\n

Year 7 students complete a semester studying Robotics\/Digital Technology, while Year 8 students undertake Materials Technology.<\/p>\n

Year 9 and 10 students can choose from STEM electives, such as Game Design \u2013 Animation, Materials Technology, and Systems Technology.<\/p>\n

Year 9 students can also enrol in the popular Forensic Science elective, where they explore crime scene protocol and evidence analysis, completing a folio of investigations and case study analyses.<\/p>\n

For their final years of schooling, a range of STEM VCE subjects are offered in Year 11 and 12, including Biology, Chemistry, Systems Engineering, Computing, Mathematical Methods, Physics, General Maths, Product Design and Technology, and Psychology. Students can also engage in hands-on VET courses through partnering institutions.<\/p>\n

“It’s not just what and how the STEM curriculum is taught; the facilities in which our students learn are so crucial,” Ms Ellis said.<\/p>\n

Both campuses have dedicated primary STEM learning spaces, with secondary students at GLC Armstrong Creek having access to a modern laboratory and specialised Tech Precinct, housing the campus’ Materials Technology and Product Design and Technology facilities.<\/p>\n
