GEELONG Sustainability is celebrating the success of its 2023 Electric Homes Program, with community participation levels and program uptake across the region exceeding expectations.<\/p>\n

The initiative, first launched in July last year, is designed to support households across the Barwon region to make the transition from gas to renewable energy and efficient electric appliances.<\/p>\n

Following the strong attendance of 1,500 people at the program’s information sessions, a total of 318 households installed new products in their homes through the initiative.<\/p>\n

Hot water heat pumps were the most popular product of choice, with more than 158 installed in households across the region, while 79 households installed solar and battery systems.<\/p>\n

Geelong Sustainability estimates that the installation of these renewable energy and efficient electrical appliances will save participating households a combined $214,366 annually on their energy bills.<\/p>\n

This translates to $5.3 million in cost savings over a 25-year period.<\/p>\n

The environmental impact of last year’s program is also significant, with Geelong Sustainability estimating 770 tons of CO2 emissions have been reduced annually, the equivalent of removing 183 cars from the road.<\/p>\n

All systems installed as part of the program also contribute to the donation of solar panel systems and hot water heat pumps to families through the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative.<\/p>\n

The success of last year’s program means 44 solar panels and six hot water heat pumps systems are set to be donated on to members of the local community.<\/p>\n

“We are thrilled with the results of the program which exceeded the target we set,” Geelong Sustainability chief executive Dan Cowdell said.<\/p>\n

“We noticed during our information sessions that many people are wanting a more sustainable home and to save on energy costs, but haven’t known where to start or who to trust, so we’ve taken that first step for them.<\/p>\n

“We can’t wait to launch version two of the program in a few months where there will also be a focus on making your home more efficient.”<\/p>\n
