A LOCAL school crossing supervisor has been nominated for this year’s prestigious School Crossing Supervisor of the Year Award.<\/p>\n

John Carey, who has been a school crossing supervisor since 2013, has been based in Thomson at the wombat crossing on the corner of Powell Street and Lomond Terrace for the past five years.<\/p>\n

There, he ensures the safety and wellbeing of families from Tate Street Primary School, St Margaret’s Primary School and Geelong Children’s Centre.<\/p>\n

Previously unaware of the award, Mr Carey was shocked and delighted to be nominated by St Margaret’s Primary School and Tate Street Primary School.<\/p>\n

He said the key to being a successful crossing supervisor was building rapport with people.<\/p>\n

“I never had kids of my own, so I take a keen interest in their activities and get along well with the parents \u2013 it’s like the Lomond Terrace social club,” Mr Carey said.<\/p>\n

“We’re all good mates and on a first-name basis \u2013 it makes your day and gives you something to look forward to.<\/p>\n

“I love the job and I’d do it for nothing; the reward I get is seeing the kids every day.”<\/p>\n

Established in 2010 by School Crossing Victoria, the award acknowledges the dedication of the state’s school crossing supervisors to providing a safe and enjoyable journey for families to and from school.<\/p>\n

Winners are selected by an independent judging panel across several criteria, including professionalism, knowledge of road rules, demeanour, helpfulness, involvement with the school community and attendance.<\/p>\n

Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan praised Mr Carey’s impact on the local community over the past 11 years.<\/p>\n

“John’s enthusiasm and genuine care for the children and families he serves have made him a cherished member of the community,” Cr Sullivan said.<\/p>\n

“His nomination is well-deserved recognition of his hard work and passion to help others.”<\/p>\n

Chair of the city transport portfolio, councillor Ron Nelson, also highlighted Mr Carey’s exceptional service and the respect he has earned from the community.<\/p>\n

“John’s dedication is inspiring, and we are incredibly fortunate to have someone like John looking out for the safety of local families,”<\/p>\n

Cr Nelson said.<\/p>\n

“His award nomination is a testament to his commitment, exceptional service, and the positive impact he has had on countless people.”<\/p>\n

The winners of this year’s School Crossing Supervisor Award will be announced July 12.<\/p>\n
