{"id":98012,"date":"2024-06-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-03T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=98012"},"modified":"2024-06-04T09:17:13","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T23:17:13","slug":"heritage-restorations-rewarded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/heritage-restorations-rewarded\/","title":{"rendered":"Heritage restorations rewarded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LOCAL tuck pointer has been awarded the inaugural Jennifer Bantow Local Heritage Award in recognition of his work restoring historic buildings around Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>After decades of work, Nat De-Palma received the award for his longstanding services to heritage conservation in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Mr De-Palma said it was special to receive recognition for his work and he enjoyed passing on his skills to others.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel quite honoured to have been recognised and I&#8217;m happy about the award, especially being the first one,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very thankful for the buildings we have restored because they&#8217;ll be here for another 100 years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/06\/hERITAGEAWARD_36802.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jennifer Bantow awarded Nat De-Palma with the Local Heritage Award. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr De-Palma started his career as a bricklayer, working alongside his father before becoming frustrated the historic buildings were falling apart with nobody to fix them.<\/p>\n<p>To save the buildings he taught himself how to tuckpoint, a method using two colours of mortar to join the brick work, one in a colour matching the brick, creating the appearance of really fine joins.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I got upset that many important buildings were being pulled down during the 1970&#8217;s, and I wanted to do something about it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m traditional with my methods; I still make my mixes with my feet on a hessian bag, exactly as I was taught, and my recipes are nearly 200 years old-strictly no cement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His first job was tuckpointing a house on Eastern Beach Road, before he was approached by the National Trust to re-point the platform at the Geelong Railway Station.<\/p>\n<p>Mr De-Palma has worked on a number of buildings across the region including several historic residential buildings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I pretty well travel anywhere the work is and it&#8217;s worth it because the buildings get protected,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As long as they&#8217;ve been fixed up, no one&#8217;s going to pull them down.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98020\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98020\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98020 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/06\/IMG_2472_28543-1-rotated.jpg?_t=1716982873\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/06\/IMG_2472_28543-1-rotated.jpg 683w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/06\/IMG_2472_28543-1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The tuck pointer still uses traditional methods to complete his restorations, including making his mixes with his feet.
