{"id":98467,"date":"2024-06-08T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-07T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=98467"},"modified":"2024-06-05T20:20:10","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T10:20:10","slug":"barwon-knitting-project-on-display-this-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/barwon-knitting-project-on-display-this-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Barwon knitting project on display this month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A COMMUNITY knitting project has yielded positive results with a launch event taking place in a week&#8217;s time to showcase the efforts of residents across the region.<\/p>\n<p>Barwon Community Legal Service (BCLS) announced the beginning of the Barwon Urban Knitting Community Project in early-March, led by the Barwon Elder Abuse Primary Prevention Network.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative invited residents to engage with a series of workshops in recent months, knitting and crocheting colourful blankets, beanies and more, which will go on exhibition and then be donated to local non-profit organisations and charities.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, the crafts created over the past three months will be on display at the Geelong Library &amp; Heritage Centre for the month of June.<\/p>\n<p>A launch event will be held on Friday, June 14 with a BCLS spokesperson saying it is already reaching capacity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There have been 17 community hubs and libraries in the Barwon region that have participated in this project to work towards ending elder abuse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This event is the perfect opportunity for all involved in the Barwon Urban Knitting Community Project to come together, showcase their creations, and celebrate their hard work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>BCLS exclusively told this publication in March, it would be undertaking this initiative in a bid make a compelling call to action on reducing elder abuse.<\/p>\n<p>BCLS chief executive officer Bryanna Connell said the service&#8217;s project would help weave a tapestry of inclusivity and unity. &#8220;Using craft is a great way to bring people together, working towards a common goal whilst having important conversations about issues that impact our community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will periodically be posting craft inspiration on our BCLS social media pages, and we encourage everyone to join the conversation and contribute to the collective community engagement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope this [project] will foster a world where the accomplishments of older individuals are not only recognised but celebrated by the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the Barwon Urban Knitting Community Project or the exhibition, phone BCLS on 1300 430 599 or head to <a href=\"https:\/\/events.grlc.vic.gov.au\/events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">events.grlc.vic.gov.au\/events<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A COMMUNITY knitting project has yielded positive results with a launch event taking place in a week&#8217;s time to showcase the efforts of residents across the region.
