{"id":99595,"date":"2024-06-29T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-28T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=99595"},"modified":"2024-06-26T19:50:49","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T09:50:49","slug":"citizen-scientists-celebrated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/citizen-scientists-celebrated\/","title":{"rendered":"Citizen scientists celebrated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCAL volunteers from EstuaryWatch, WaterWatch and Corangamite CMA have been celebrated for the contribution of their citizen scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian government is recognising the volunteers for their work in supporting the waterways health across the Corangamite region.<\/p>\n<p>On June 24 the Corangamite CMA presented the Barwon Basin Water Quality Summary.<\/p>\n<p>Citizen scientists collected the data for the report over the past three years at 50 WaterWatch and three EstuaryWatch sites along the Moorabool, Leigh and Barwon Rivers.<\/p>\n<p>The volunteers undertake scientific research and on-ground activities to help ensure Victoria&#8217;s biodiversity and natural environment continue to thrive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/06\/IMG_2858_45552.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Local citizen scientist volunteers from the Corangamite region were celebrated for their contributions to healthier waterways in the region. Photo: ABBY PARDEW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Geelong MP Christine Couzens represented Minister for Water Harriet Shing at the event where results from the report were discussed.<\/p>\n<p>The data helps fill gaps in information about waterway health with the citizen scientists able to monitor water quality and collect environmental information.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through the citizen science program volunteers gain skills and knowledge and become important advocates for their local river, wetlands and estuaries while also collecting data to help inform decision making,&#8221; Ms Couzens said.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers in the Corangamite catchment gathered water quality measurements and macro-invertebrate in targeted areas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/06\/IMG_2880_45567.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Russel and Marie Ford are part of the WaterWatchers who collected data, along with Corangamite CMA&#8217;s Deirdre Murphy.
