{"id":99635,"date":"2024-07-03T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=99635"},"modified":"2024-06-26T20:45:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T10:45:44","slug":"slater-to-tackle-60km-for-mens-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/slater-to-tackle-60km-for-mens-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Slater to tackle 60km for men&#8217;s mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A CURLEWIS local is hoping to shine a light on men&#8217;s health by setting out on his biggest physical challenge yet.<\/p>\n<p>Dylan Slater will be running 60km from Curlewis to the Anglesea Football Netball Club rooms on July 20 to raise funds for Cancer Council Australia.<\/p>\n<p>All funds generated will directly support life-saving research, prevention and support services for those touched by cancer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/IMG_9302_19246.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr Slater is teaming up with Cancer Council Victoria for a cancer-free future.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 32-year-old local footballer and nurse raised over $3,000 during his inaugural Run for Men&#8217;s Health in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>He said the recent loss of a close friend is giving him plenty of inspiration to do even more for the cause this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In light of losing a dear friend and inspired by the great work of Australian running hero Ned Brockman, I wanted to do something to raise more awareness of\u00a0men&#8217;s health.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_138535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138535\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-138535\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/IMG_9320_19213-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-138535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr Slater has QR codes and donation pages set around the club and Greater Geelong region.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Men aren&#8217;t the best at talking about their health struggles and generally don&#8217;t until it&#8217;s too late.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me it&#8217;s about reducing the stigma around speaking up and getting help, that way we can save more lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Slater has taken up marathon running over the past two years, but noted the 60km would be a different beast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously last year my run was a huge success, but this year it was about going bigger and better.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/thumbnail_IMG_9274_20581.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1178\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dylan Slater is teaming up with Cancer Council Victoria for his second men&#8217;s health run.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;60km will be the biggest run I&#8217;ve ever done. I ran a 45km marathon last year, but this will be a bit more than that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said the Anglesea Football Netball Club had been a huge supporter of his mission over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our club president Paul Nigro and the team have been fantastic in their support for my challenge and have already been throwing a few donations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_138537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138537\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-138537\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/IMG_9310_16845-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-138537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dylan Slater plays football at Anglesea FNC in the BFNL.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I can get to that $6,000 target, then it would just be absolutely amazing.
