An afternoon with Bizet and Beethoven
AFTER over a year’s absence, the Ballarat Symphony Orchestra is back, returning to the stage at the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts to present an afternoon concert of orchestral music by Bizet and Beethoven.
As well as the magnificent Symphony No.7 by Ludwig van Beethoven, the BSO’s program includes selections from Georges Bizet’s Carmen suites, music overflowing with passion and melody.
On Sunday 15 June at 2.30pm, conductor Nicole Marshall will guide Ballarat’s community orchestra through this exciting program.
Marshall, a rising star in the international classical music world, was the recipient of both the 2018 and the 2024 Rosemary and John Hopkins Award for Conductors. Displaying artistic maturity beyond her years, Marshall is an artist of emotional depth, drawing deep character out of her music. Her conducting career is certainly one to watch.
The Ballarat Symphony Orchestra is already working hard on this interesting program. While rehearsals began on 24 April, the BSO is still keen to welcome interested string players into its ranks.
Rehearsals are on Thursday nights (7.30pm-10pm) at the Ballarat Memorial Concert Band’s Wilkinson Hall, Barkly Street, Ballarat. To join, email the BSO Committee at [email protected] .
Pulses will quicken as the BSO transports the audience to the streets and arenas of Spain with popular and invigorating tunes from Les Toréadors, the Aragonaise and the Danse Bohème, all composed by Bizet for his spectacular opera, Carmen.

Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 simply brims with life. This masterwork has been famously described as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’ – it’s a thrilling melodic and rhythmic journey.
The Ballarat Symphony Orchestra is a long-standing community organisation that is committed to enriching the lives of audiences and players alike.
Please put 15 June into your diary – support the orchestra, the community and be richly rewarded with an afternoon of wonderful music.
