SUMMER is the season to catch your breath after a busy year. And recharge for the new one.

This Summer Sovereign Hill invites you to experience events that honour the legacy of gold seekers who came to Ballarat and left the enduring gift of their cultures.

They explored, they shared their stories and food, created entertainment and art as they made their own traditions.

At Sovereign Hill become part of the timeless spirit of joy.

“We’re celebrating a big summer of art, design and entertainment that came to the goldfields from all around the world,” said deputy CEO Katrina Nitschke.

“Throughout we’ll shine a light on the legacy of the Chinese contribution which will culminate with a four-day Lunar New Year celebration from 26 to 29 January.”

Food glorious food

Our landmark restaurant, The New York Bakery building has had a major makeover along with a menu that offers a modern twist on some traditional staples. Try the diggers lamb stew with damper or the homestead corned beef sandwich. Wash it down with our new Sovereign Hill beers on tap.

The art of history is a crafty business

Sovereign Hill was inspired by artists of the 1850s who drew the goldfields.

Three Ballarat artists including Bren Luke, Pauline O’Shannessy-Dowling, and Jenna Oldaker have created works which reimagine our site. Explore the exhibition and be inspired to create your own artwork.

The hill is alive with the sound of music

Main street will host musicians who play tunes that rocked back in the day and now. Strolling singing groups will add to the lyrical atmosphere swirling in the air. Take a seat in the Victoria Theatre to boo and hiss at Blackbeard the pantomime.

Come together

Head to our lake surrounded by beautiful gardens with your Sovereign Hill picnic pack, watch or play lawn games including giant chess, Jenga or naughts and crosses. Perhaps put your head through the wooden hole to find yourself in a novelty photo of a yesteryear character.

Lunar New Year, hop to the Year of the Rabbit

In January, we are gearing up for a tribute to the Chinese who came to the goldfields, bringing their culture and practices from home.

Watch the lion and dragon parades, Chinese dancers, music, lanterns, tai chi demonstrations and classes, plus Asian inspired food and drinks.

“Summer is a time to reset and recharge as a new year beckons,” Ms Nitschke said.

“We have a program that offers a chance to do something different for everyone of all ages that’s inspiring fun and creative.”

Sometimes the best summer memories are made in your backyard.

At Sovereign Hill, we’re ready, are you?
