Unbottling a successful career in science
THE vast career opportunities a science certification lends itself to continue to rise, and nowhere is this more evident than in the success story of Thomas Strain.
A proud graduate of The Gordon TAFE, Mr Strain seamlessly transformed his studies in laboratory techniques into a thriving career at IDL.
His decision to enrol at The Gordon TAFE was driven by several factors.
The primary reason was The Gordon’s commitment to providing a comprehensive skill set in science.
The laboratory techniques courses at The Gordon boast excellent job outcomes, with an impressive 90 per cent of diploma students securing employment before graduation.
This is a testament to the practical and industry-focused approach of the course.
“When I researched entry-level science courses, The Gordon offered the broadest skill set and was still local,” Mr Strain.
“I had previously studied there in preparation for my diploma and liked the dedication I saw from the staff and teachers.”
Mr Strain credits this dedication and support from his teachers and The Gordon’s industry connections for his successful transition into his current role.
“My teachers were actually the ones that recommended me for my current position, and we have kept in touch from time to time so I could update them on how things were progressing,” he said.
“If I had any questions for them, they were more than happy to help whenever they could.
“Nothing was too much trouble for them, and I am very grateful to have such amazing mentors to help me on this journey.”
The impact of Mr Strain’s education at The Gordon has become apparent in his workplace IDL, a family-owned and operated beverage solutions provider.
Quality assurance manager Nat Lutzko at IDL attests to Mr Strain’s exceptional laboratory skills and considers him a valuable asset to the team.
“Thomas’s commitment to excellence in his laboratory work has been evident since he joined us,” she said.
“His skill set, honed during his time at The Gordon, aligns perfectly with the demands of our growing industry.
“He is a valuable member of the IDL team, and we look forward to witnessing more graduates with similar training enter the field.”
IDL’s continues to expand its clientele and operations and, as a business, serves as a good representation of the growth of the food and wine testing industry.
The growth and opportunities within the sector illustrates the need for well-trained laboratory technicians like Mr Strain has never been more crucial.
