BEAUTY observed with a keen, artist’s eye is at the heart of a coming exhibition of work by printmaker Marie Mason.

Mason’s solo print exhibition Victoria in Print will launch at the Ross Creek Gallery in Smythes Creek on Sunday 1 February.

It will feature about 40 works depicting scenes from the artist’s travels across Victoria and Western Australia over 25 years.

Drawing inspiration from her faith and the landscape, Mason’s work aims to share positivity and light.

“I’m trying to separate and simplify the patterns of nature and print them accurately together to show the beauty and diversity of God’s creations,” the Ballarat-based artist said.

Mason honed her skills while working and exhibiting at the Australian Print Workshop for 10 years, and also over many years at the Firestation Print Studio in Armadale.

“The presence of sunlight and shade in the landscape, twilight shadows and water, are all fascinating challenges,” she said.

“Several works showcase the sun’s last flare on our timbered garden. It happens most afternoons and lasts about three minutes.

“I love making beautiful, interesting pictures and am addicted to lino printmaking.

“I have been mainly influenced by the strong pattern and line work of Claude Flight, Eric Thake, Thea Proctor, Margaret Preston, Murray Griffin, Hans Heyson, El Greco, van Gogh and Picasso, and the Fauves, also current top Australian printmakers.”
