Why become a Foster Carer?
Because every child is one caring adult away from being a success story.
ACROSS Australia, there are over 45,000 children living in out-of-home care; this is enough to fill most sports stadiums.
One in 33 children in Australia receives child protection with the cost of caring for these children in Australia reaching $4 billion.
In Victoria, we have nearly 10,000 children needing care and over the last five years, the rate of children and young people needing a home in Victoria has increased 37 per cent.
That equates to 37,000 children over this period needing care.
If we want these children and young people to recover from the trauma they have experienced and become healthy happy and productive members of our community we need YOU!… Caring adults.
All our Carers share a desire to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children in need. They are compassionate and resilient with a dash of humour mixed in for safe keeping.
Foster Carers help children and young people who are temporarily unable to live with their birth families.
Foster Carers come from many different backgrounds, they can be single, or have a partner, have no children or have children of their own, they can rent or own their own home, work, stay at home, study or be retired and can be from any culture, religion or sexual orientation.
If you can love; you can love a child!
There are many types of foster care. You can provide care overnight (emergency), for a weekend, a few weeks, a few months or a few years. The choice is yours; you choose the type of care that suits you.
Foster Carers are trained, assessed and accredited before they start caring for a child or a young person. At Cafs, a foster care specialist team member walks by your side every step of the way.
Foster care is a vital and a valuable program, because it provides a safe warm space for children to grow and develop.
Watching the moment a child begins to open up and embrace the world with love and trust is an incredible experience; equally enriching for the foster carers and foster child alike.
There is no single answer to the question “Why become a Foster Carer”?
There is though, a more valuable question to ask; can I love and nurture a child in need? With your help every child and young person can begin to look to the future with hope!
