A taste of Italy in Victoria

More than one hundred and fifty million dollars worth of classic cars will be travelling through the region this month.

The 2024 Targa Classica will involve 120 cars taking a four-day journey through Western Victoria, beginning on Monday 18 March at Victoria Park.

They will cover more than 1100 kilometres around the Goldfields, Grampians, Great Ocean Road, and Macedon Ranges regions.

Car brands including Bugatti, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and classic Australian makes and models like the Holden Sandman and Torana, as well as Fords will be involved in the event.

“We wanted to create an event that celebrated cars, the event’s Italian roots, and also Victoria’s regional centres,” said Andrew Lawson, founder of Targa Classica.

“With direct links to Italian heritage through the event, we feel it’s important to show off the highlights of our amazing state, in keeping with the tradition and foundations of the event’s Italian connection.”

Event organisers estimated more than $1 million could be added to regional economies with more than 1500 hotel beds to be booked and 4500 meals served during the run.

The event is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and inspired by classic car events in Italy including Coppa Delle Alpi, Coppa Milano Sanremo, Mille Miglia, Nuvolari, and Targa Florio.

“Our aim is to create a travelling motoring festa where local spectators can enjoy the spectacle of the cars, interact with the drivers, and immerse themselves in the event,” said Mr Lawson.
