Ballarat’s best musos unite for bushfires

PERFORMER, Lisa Laine had a strong desire to donate to the Victorian bushfire appeal, but as one person, knew she could only give a limited amount of money.

“We’re all carrying the pain of what’s going on all around us, and we’re all acutely aware, feeling the need to do something,” she said.

“I thought, how can I give more? I’m connected to musicians and artists here in Ballarat, why don’t I just see if there’s interest in putting on a charity concert?”

Reaching out to the creative and events planning communities within half an hour of the idea, Laine spoke to everyone she knew with only positive responses.

That ring-around has formed Ballarat’s Best for Bushfire Relief, a concert and evening of art generating funds for the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise Foundation, established for the Victorian bushfires.

Set for the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute on Friday, 17 January, from 5pm until late, the bill will include Stella Savvy and Ballarat Ska Union, Saint Ivory, Mick Trembath, and The Vests, with more artists to be confirmed.

A family friendly event, Laine said some plans are subject to change due to the fast and ambitious turnaround, but the Minerva Space and Humffray Room are expected to both be activated, showcasing the bigger bands, smaller acoustic acts and other artforms.

“It will be a really positive vibe and a sign of the community banding together and making something happen for the good of our neighbours, so I think there’s going to be a heartfelt energy,” she said.

“Everyone who buys a ticket and comes to the event will feel as though they’re able to contribute something in a different way, that works towards a larger donation than perhaps they’re able to give on their own.”
