ARE you over sixty and keen to expand your understanding of the digital world?

Bannockburn Library is set to host a Social Seniors initiative, inviting people interested in strengthening their technology and social media skills to take part in a series of two-hour workshops.

The sessions will aim to give attendees simple tips and tricks for best smartphone or tablet use, teach them about how social media platforms and video calls work, how they can publish their own content online, and respond to any online safety, privacy, and security concerns.

Geelong Regional Libraries CEO Vanessa Schernickau said the program is all about addressing the community’s digital divide.

“We live in a time when it is important for everyone to feel confident navigating the digital landscape, whether for social connection, entertainment or simply to participate in our digital economy,” she said.

“We know that many over-60s lack confidence online and could benefit from help to develop digital skills.

“This program is designed specifically for these people and will be a great opportunity for seniors to come together in a relaxed, social, and welcoming environment, and participate in practical, fun, and hands-on sessions delivered by our expert library staff.”

The workshops will run throughout October looking at video call platform Zoom, building device and app skills, and an introduction to social media. All people need to bring along is a willingness to learn, and their online device.

“We hope that all participants will go away with new-found confidence in using their devices and navigating the online environment, including using Zoom and social media platforms to connect and share stories,” Ms Schernickau said.
