BGT Trade School was well represented recently when three of their welding apprentices placed first, second and third at the Ballarat and Wimmera World Skills Regional Championships.

Zac Lucas won the competition as an apprentice of MaxiTrans, Angus Creelman of Findlay Engineering was second and Ryan Baudendistal of Munro Engineering finished third.

Convenor and head judge, Stephen Creelman said there were nine competitors from six or seven employers around the city.

“The competition was extremely tight, so only one or one and a half points separated first to fourth,” he said.

“It’s a series of welds that the guys have to do, set to a code standard. These guys are welding at the next level beyond advanced, so it’s way above the day to day skill level required at their apprenticeship, so a lot of practice goes into it.

“I was really impressed with their high skill level and overall scores, and the boys that won it deserved it, it was a big day. Win, lose or draw, the experience they get out of it is really valuable.”

Usually, the first-place getter would now begin preparing for nationals, which will be held in Perth next year, but due to his age, Mr Lucas will be too old.

Mr Creelman and Mr Baudendistal have the opportunity to apply for this spot in the championships, so could begin a demanding period of training ahead of the next stage of the competition.

Success in Western Australia may mean one of the two Ballarat welders could travel to China to compete in 2021.
