Big banned snake seized
CONSERVATION Regulator wildlife officers from Agriculture Victoria, along with Victoria Police, seized an albino Burmese python from home in Ballarat last week.
The exotic animal, which is native to South East Asia, was 2.75 meters long and taken following the execution of a search warrant.
“We are always really concerned when we discover an exotic reptile in Victoria due to the enormous threat they pose to Victoria’s biodiversity and agriculture,” said Conservation Regulator wildlife officer Jared Priestly.
“Illegally imported animals have the potential to significantly impact our natural environment because of the exotic diseases they may carry.”
A statement from the Conservation Regulator said, “Enquiries about where the python came from and how it got into Victoria are ongoing.”
Possession of illegally imported animals, like Burmese pythons, is a criminal offence, and carries penalties including up to 10 years’ jail and fines of up to $110,000.
“Anyone with information on illegal wildlife trafficking is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” said wildlife officer Priestly.
According to the Conservation Regulator, Burmese pythons can grow up to five meters long and pose a risk to people and pets in they get lose.
They can also affect native animal populations and have become pest species in places like southern and central Florida in the USA.
