Bulls bid for junior women’s team
TWO years after developing their senior women’s side, members of the Bannockburn Cricket Club are looking to build their junior female ranks.
As part of the initiative, free registration and playing gear is being offered to players, with equipment provided by the club.
BCC women’s coordinator Brittany Mitchell said it’s important for young women to have the opportunities to play locally.
“We’re looking to get some junior teams off the ground and we’ll be submitting the teams into the Geelong competition,” she said.
“The free registration will be the first season and it’s to break down the barriers for participation and get them involved.
“This will be our first time with junior girls. Anyone over 14 can participate in our women’s teams but we want to open it up to girls locally so they don’t have to travel to Geelong.”
Girls aged eight to 19 are able to take part in the initiative.
The club currently has two senior women’s sides with their younger girls playing in their mixed teams.
Ms Mitchell said the girl’s recruitment effort will kick off with a come and try day on Sunday 11 September.
“That’s when we’re going to try to get as many down as we can to give it a go, try it out, and attract some new players,” she said. “The priority is to see what interest is out there.
“I know the Geelong Junior Cricket Association has worked really hard to make junior girls’ competitions available, as an emerging club it’s a good opportunity for us to open this up.”
