Championing the disability community

THE International Day of People with Disabilities will be celebrated proudly, with Ballarat Peer Action Group taking the lead on Tuesday, 3 December.

At the Zoo Drive Rotunda up at Lake Wendouree, everyone is welcome to bring their friends and enjoy a free barbecue and drinks from 11.30am to 2pm.

Ballarat Peer Action Group’s Mark Thompson said there are days to celebrate many and varying causes and walks of life, so why not those of all abilities?

“They have national cancer day, stroke day, every day is a different day for people in the community, but this is all about people with disabilities, their supporters and families that have people with disabilities,” he said.

Ballarat Ukulele Group will provide entertainment and members of the community and council will speak.

The Annual Shane Everard and Matt Mattson awards will be presented at the event acknowledging local businesses and groups who make all-abilities access and inclusion a focus of their operations.

“These awards will decide who, or which business, in the community shows commitment to provide access and inclusion, and a welcoming attitude,” Mr Thompson said.

For those who have completed an Easy Access Report Card, five $50 vouchers will be up for grabs, amongst other giveaways.
