Changes coming to busy intersection

MAJOR works have begun to install a roundabout at the intersection of Dyson Drive and Carngham Road.

It will be built in stages, beginning on the north-east corner with the works involving earth moving and building pavements, drainage, asphalt and a traffic island.

A statement from the Department of Transport said the works will create delays for residents, particularly at peak times.

The first stage will involve a temporary lane closure on Ballarat-Carngham Road and speed reduction to 40kph.

The works are part of the State Government funded Keeping Ballarat Moving initiative which is designed to upgrade traffic hotspots in the city.

“Our crews have begun construction of a new roundabout at this intersection, which will help to tackle congestion and boost safety for thousands of drivers,” said Michael Bailey, regional director with the Department of Transport and Planning.

“With Ballarat’s population predicted to continue to grow significantly over the next 15 years, this project is crucial to improve traffic flow at one of the area’s increasingly busy intersections.”

The intersection is a key route for residents in Lucas and Delacombe and growth in the suburbs has led to an increase in traffic.

Usage is projected to increase by 60 per cent by 2041 and there were seven crashes which resulted in injury between 2014 and 2019.
