CHILDREN from across the region are taking part in programs run by Queenscliff-based children’s charity Cottage by the Sea.

The private charity offers regular programs for kids throughout Australia aimed at building confidence, resilience and life-skills.

As part of the program children from places like Linton Primary School take part in a range of activities, and Cottage by the Sea CEO Adam Wake said the organisation offers many opportunities.

“The underpinning goals of the program are for young people to be actively contributing to their community, school, home and at Cottage,” he said.

“Participants can develop a broad range of skills by taking part in a number of opportunities.

“For instance, during the recent school holidays some of these participants took part in courses aimed at supporting their job readiness.

“In the second week of the holidays, another group pushed themselves physically and mentally during a four-day rock climbing and bush camping experience at Mount Arapiles.”

Cottage by the Sea was founded in 1890 and is supported through donations and fundraisers so the organisation can provide programs for 1500 children each year.

Recently, seven Linton children were invited to take part and Mr Wake said they were able to try many different seaside activities including surfing.

“During their four days in Queenscliff, the children from Linton enjoyed numerous fun activities all designed to help build resilience, confidence and self-esteem in young people,” he said.

“By far the standout was learning to surf. The weather was fine and the surf was perfect size for beginners. The children had an amazing time learning to surf in the great conditions.”

Last year, from Linton Primary School children raised over $400 alongside Linton Takeaway & Newsagency’s $1000 to form a community donation to Cottage by the Sea.
