Club crowned in women’s comp
PLAYERS at Inverleigh Golf Club took home the winning trophy in the Winchelsea Women’s Memorial Bowl for the first time in a decade.
The club was represented by women’s captain Deb Nicholls and members Helen Gaylard and Lesley Richardson who competed against 42 players from 14 clubs.
The game took place on Monday last week at the Winchelsea Golf Club, and Nicholls said she was pleased with bringing top honours to her club.
“We hadn’t won for so long so we were shocked and thrilled to win this year’s,” she said.
“We won with a score of 90 and I think the runner-up had 88 [which was] Ocean Grove.”
The single-day Stableford game consisted of 18 holes with each club’s tallies combined from individual player’s scores.
Nicholls scored 34 points with Gaylard inking 29 to her card, and Robertson coming of the final hole 27 points.
Alongside the team’s win, Nicholls also won the A Grade award.
With the event rescheduled from its original October date due to rain, Gaylard said she was surprised to win the competition.
“We hadn’t been able to practice for about eight weeks ourselves because of all the wet weather so we weren’t really expecting it,” she said.
“The Winchelsea course was a bit unique. They had one hole called the quarry hole… where you’re hitting up and the ball goes down into the middle of an actual quarry.
“We’ve been taking part in the Bowl for many years. I’ve been with the club for about eight.
“The whole club’s very relaxed, welcoming and easy to get along with so I enjoy playing with them.”
There are currently 18 female members at Inverleigh Golf Club.
