Club launches summer season
MEMBERS of the Bannockburn Tennis Club opened their courts up to the community on Sunday with more than fifty people coming along.
Club secretary Rachael Le Maitre said the event was a way to launch the summer competition that starts tomorrow.
“It was a great chance for everyone to come together if they didn’t know anybody, and to have a hit with their teammates,” she said.
“We ended up having the adults pairing up with the junior player so there was some serious sets of tennis played too which was fun.
“We had some new faces join us too so it wasn’t just for people playing this season but anyone who wanted to come along.”
Federal Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker, was among the attendees, whom club members thanked for her part in funding a new defibrillator for their facilities.
While the courts were in use, a barbecue was also held at the site’s recently-installed pit and pergola.
With their summer competition to run internally until March, this season also marks Bannockburn Tennis Club’s first time entering a team into the Geelong Tennis Thursday night triples.
Ms Le Maitre said everyone is more than welcome to take part in their weekly social sessions.
“The newcomers who came said they really enjoyed themselves and said they’re keen to come back,” she said.
“They might come back to our social hits which on a Wednesday we have juniors for free from 4pm to 6pm and then seniors from 6pm onwards for $5.
“We’ve absolutely got more people interested and wanting to play so everyone’s welcome to come along.”
