WITH the regional Victorian Commonwealth Games only three years away, the next Golden Plains Shire Northern Business Network event will focus on how local enterprises can benefit.

Municipal coordinator economic development Peter Ridsdale said an overview of plans for the Commonwealth Games, infrastructure needs, and the potential for people and enterprises across the Shire to capitalise on visitation will be discussed.

How businesses can be more accessible now, during the games, and into the future, is another topic set to be in focus.

“With more than 100,000 visitors expected to the Ballarat region during the Commonwealth Games in 2026, Golden Plains Shire council expect there will be demand for accommodation on the outskirts of Ballarat and more demand for hospitality services in hotels and cafes,” Mr Ridsdale said.

“At the meeting, council will provide an insight into the potential flow of activity and opportunity for local businesses in the lead up to and during the Commonwealth Games.

“Golden Plains Shire council access and inclusion officer Melanie Linguey will also explore how to ensure local business premises and community facilities are accessible and inclusive, in turn opening their business or facility up to a new market of potential customers.

“This presentation will provide all the relevant information for local businesses to better understand how the Disability Discrimination Act impacts businesses and provide practical tips for ensuring better access.

“Golden Plains Shire council will provide further updates, and more detailed information, as to how local business owners and residents in Golden Plains Shire can participate in and benefit from this significant international sporting event at subsequent Northern Business Network meetings.”

The Northern Business Network Meeting will be held in Smythesdale from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday, 26 April at The Well’s Digital Hub.
