THE digitised sounds of retrofuturism will resound from the Supernatural Amphitheatre later this year with German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk announced as the top act at Meredith Music Festival.

Slated for three days in early December, the synth-pop foursome were announced as headliners of the festival’s 31st incarnation last week, with the ballot for subsequent spots now open.

A statement from organiser Aunty Meredith said the overseas act is a huge draw for the festival.

“The Robots in postcode 3333. Where to begin? Kraftwerk, quite simply, are the reason music sounds like it does today. Progenitors of pop. Of music as we know it,” the statement said.

“The cabling was laid for myriad musical revolutions. For post-punk, synth-pop, hip hop and techno.

“And now, they set controls for the heart of the Sup’er Computer.”

Formed in 1970 by the group’s stalwart Ralf Hütter, and Florian Schneider in Düsseldorf, West Germany, Kraftwerk is often credited as a major influence on contemporary pop.

Groups can enter to perform at Meredith Music Festival via mmf.com.au, with submissions open until 10.31pm on Monday 14 August.
