Delay in bin roll out
THE roll-out of purple-lidded glass recycling bins in the Golden Plains Shire has been delayed until the end of the year.
Households were initially expected to begin using the bins in October, however supply issues have been named as the reason for delay.
“Golden Plains Shire Council ordered the new purple-lidded bins in early 2024, however delivery has been delayed due to supply issues as many councils placed large orders at the same time,” said a Golden Plains Shire spokesperson.
“Each property that currently receives waste services will get one purple-lidded bin delivered by council’s contractor.
“The rollout phase will start at the end of 2024.”
The separate purple glass bins will be introduced in 2025 and at the same time, the frequency of collection of the yellow recycling bin will change from weekly to fortnightly.
State Government legislation states that all local government areas must move to a four-bin system by 2030.
“The new purple-lidded glass bin has been mandated by the State Government’s Circular Economy Act 2021, which aims to standardise household recycling across the state,” said the spokesperson.
“Introducing the glass bin service will help council recover more glass, improve the quality of recycled glass (which can be recycled indefinitely), and reduce contamination in the mixed recycling bin.”
More information about the changes can be found on the Golden Plains Shire website.
