FedUni VC to speak at leadership forum

INDIVIDUALS and organisations know, from research and intuitively, that female representation in leadership and management can boost performance.

While everyone has a vested interest in seeing more women become top leaders, from a pay parity perspective, evolution is slow.

Australian Women’s Leadership Forum, being held in Ballarat on Friday, 15 March posits, is there a new conversation that needs to start?

What else can be or is being done to accelerate these types of statistics to reach parity, equity and equality?

Five Ballarat women leaders will discuss ‘where to from here’ in a panel session at the event.

Professor Helen Bartlett, Federation University Australia’s vice-chancellor and president will be on the panel.

She has worked in higher education for more than 30 years, holding senior leadership roles at all organisational levels in universities in the UK, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Australia.

“My approach to leadership is teamwork and consultation, coupled with encouraging people to maximise their own challenges by taking responsibility and looking for opportunities and being accountable for what you do,” said Professor Bartlett.

“There are always challenges in being a leader, you learn from your mistakes and you build those into the way you work as a leader in the future,” she said.

Professor Bartlett has extensive experience of undertaking research in partnership with government, industry and communities.

“I am going to talk [on the panel] about my experience, over the past 18 months, of leading a regional university, in particular interfacing with the [broader] community, industry and business, as well as the community within the university.

“I want to talk about the multiple stake holders that leaders have to engage with in the sort of role that I am in and I want to share some of my thoughts on this.”
