FIRE season has officially started with Fire Danger Periods (FDPs) declared in many parts of the state and more to be introduced following assessments of local conditions.
With a hotter, drier summer predicted, Victorians should be preparing properties and creating a Bushfire Plan.
CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said that most of the state has experienced low rainfall, resulting in an increase in dead plant material and vegetation and increasing bushfire potential.
“We need Victorians to play their part and ensure their properties are ready and they have a plan in place,” he said.
“It is going to be a challenging fire season and with the commencement of fire danger periods, it is a good reminder to ensure those last bits of preparation get done.”
Anyone conducting burn-offs must notify authorities online at the Fire Permits Victoria website (firepermits.vic.gov.au), or by calling 1800 668 511.
Online notification is preferred with emergency calls taking priority.
During FDPs written permits are required to burn off grass, undergrowth, weeds and other vegetation.
Lighting fires in the open without a permit can bring a penalty of more than $21,800 and/or 12 months imprisonment.
Farmers can find legal guidelines and practical advice at cfa.vic.gov.au/farms.
