THE National Gallery of Victoria, or NGV, is offering free art making workshops at Bannockburn Library this January.

This is the 10th year of the NGV Kids on Tour program which will visit more than 140 locations across the state.

“It’s about bringing people together across the state to make art, connect with each other and spend time in their local community venues,” said Stephanie Pohlman, senior project coordinator.

“It features the work of local and international artists and designers.”

Activities will include drawing under water creatures, creating lanterns, designing objects based on food, and creating a collage of native Australian plants and animals.

For teenagers, there will also be sessions about building an art folio and making beaded bracelets.

Ms Pohlman said one of the reasons for the program’s success is the sense of connection it provides.

“It’s about bringing people together and that process of social connection,” she said.

“The program is inspired by the ideas of artists and designers, and it shows children that anyone can create something special.

“It’s about igniting the imagination and you don’t need to be an experienced artist.”

NGV kids on tour will run in Bannockburn until Wednesday 27 January and more information can be found at ngv.vic.gov.au/kids-on-tour.
