AS part of a drive to increase membership, Meredith Cricket Club are holding a family night next week.

It will be held on Saturday 14 October from 6.30pm at Meredith Recreation Reserve, following a game against Lethbridge.

There will be a barbecue for those who attend and club president Shane Grinter said the event will be an opportunity for the community to come together.

“Come out, shake hands and get familiar with us and everyone there so it’s a comfortable place for families to come,” he said.

“There’s no skill, age or requirements, everyone is welcome to come and be social. We’ll have a little play area for younger kids and some games and bits a pieces.”

The event is part of the club’s current goal to get more young players and female cricketers involved in the sport.

“We’ve got a real emphasis at the moment that our main priority is to get involved with the community and bring male and female youth through the club,” said Grinter.

“We also really want to get a women’s team.

“We want to become not so much a men’s cricket club but a really comfortable place for everyone.”

Grinter said that in small towns like Meredith it is important to have places for the community to come together.

“We don’t have the resources like a Division One team would in Geelong so it’s really important to get the community along and it’s a really family orientated thing,” he said.

“It’s not just somewhere to come and place a sport, it’s a safe place to be.”
