THE Golden Spaces winter exhibition will launch tomorrow, highlighting more-than twenty local artists.
An array of artworks will be on display at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre until September before it moves to The Well at Smythesdale.
The exhibition aims to encourage the broader community’s participation in and access to the arts.
It also provides development opportunities for local artists.
Deidre Bain from Russells Bridge has a charcoal portrait of Frida Kahlo and a drawing of the tree of life in the exhibition.
Bain has studied the Old Masters in Florence, Italy and was encouraged to pursue art by her late partner Ormond Grace.
“Ormond had given me a lot of encouragement,” Bain said.
“He always said I was a very good artist, and he took my work out there.
“When he passed away, I decided that if I could give back something that he’s given me through his love and encouragement, that would be the best thing to do.”

Smythes Creek based painter and photographer Vanessa Brady has been involved with the initiative since its inception.
She has two paintings of birds on display in the winter exhibition, and said it is critical to have local initiatives to support creatives.
“Whenever there are economic stressors, the arts is the first to be cut all the time,” she said.
“It can be quite confronting for a lot of artists to get their art out there. Getting it out there helps the arts community because it encourages other people and I think brings colour and life to everybody’s life.”
Bannockburn’s Lyn Steele predominantly paints birds and is exhibiting two works of rainbow lorikeets and a honeyeater.
She encouraged local creatives to become involved with Golden Spaces.
“I would really encourage anyone within the Shire to submit the artwork and participate because it really is a wonderful event,” Steele said.
“The council have been wonderful… they’re just really encouraging and fantastic to work with.
“Whether people are beginners or full-time professional artists, it’s just a wonderful way for them to showcase their art in the local community.”
The Golden Spaces summer exhibition is currently on display at The Well at Smythesdale and will move to the Golden Plains Civic Centre in August.
