STAFF at Golden Plains Shire are asking Teesdale residents for their feedback on the municipality’s flood maps that were developed as part of a study for the town.

With work beginning on the Teesdale Flood Study in August last year, residents can give their input on the current state of the maps at a public forum at Teesdale Community Hall next week.

The aim of the study is to provide more accurate flood mapping and gauge the likely impact of increased water flow in the area from Native Hut Creek.

Golden Plains Shire mayor Cr Brett Cunningham said the meeting will help update the community on the project and allow locals to continue shaping its direction.

“At the information session, council staff will provide residents with information on the study results so far and answer any questions residents may have,” he said.

“Community feedback has been integral in the development of the initial flood maps and I would encourage Teesdale residents to again take the opportunity to have their say and provide additional information on the historic flooding events that have been modelled.

“The Teesdale Flood Study will provide a more accurate picture of flood mapping in Teesdale, which will be used to inform future urban planning and to alert emergency management organisations of areas of risk in a flood event.”

Attendees are encouraged to give their perspective on historic overflows that have happened in the area that have been modelled for the study.

Photos and other evidence of past floods are also welcome as well as any information on Native Hut Creek’s ties to Aboriginal cultural values.

The municipality has worked with members the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation with the aim of preserving any vulnerable cultural artefacts.

The Teesdale Flood Study information session is set to take place at the Teesdale Community Hall on Thursday, 9 March from 4pm to 6pm.
