THE typically quite township of Shelford is set to come alive as the annual and much-loved duck race event returns next weekend.

On Sunday 22 February, hundreds will flock from around the greater Geelong region for the volunteer-run day that will see 1500 rubber ducks race down the Leigh River.

The popular event was revived by local residents in 2011 following major flooding, with the hopes of raising money for those who suffered from the catastrophe.

Now, the day has become a large one in the local calendar, with local stalls and entertainment accompanying the much-anticipated duck race to light up the town and raise money for local community groups.

Attendees can purchase a duck to enter the race, with the top 10 finishers earning a prize.

Event president and Shelford local Rebecca Jenkinson expressed her pride in running the event.

“Seeing Shelford come alive in February is amazing,” she said.

“When I came up with the idea back in 2011 to rebirth the duck race to raise money for flood-affected residents, I had a vision to build the event to fill the oval at Shelford and showcase what a wonderful farming country town it is.

“It makes me so happy to see that vision come alive and to have such an amazing committee behind me to help make it a reality.”

Ms Jenkinson explained that there will be various new stall holders at the event, as well as appearances from Ambulance Victoria, the SES, a roving circus performer and multiple musicians.

“It isn’t just an event, it is a celebration of resilience, community pride and good old country fun,” she said.

“It is a great day out for people of all ages to come along and relax in the country atmosphere.”

The event will kick off at 11am, with the duck race running at 3pm.
