NARINGAL’S Jaxson Vella has won the 2020-2021 Speedway Sedans Australia Junior South Australian State Title at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway

Driving his Daihatsu Charade, the 17-year-old had three heats during the competition meet before his ultimate race.

“We had 10 laps in our heats, and our final was 20. Most of the night was side-by-side racing,” he said.

“When you race for any title, everyone wants to win it, so it wasn’t easy, and the competition was high-level.”

Living on a farm, Jaxson has always loved riding horses and motorbikes, and driving buggies on his own home track. He first discovered race sedans at the age of 13.

“Once I started, I pushed myself to be good at it. I love every bit of it; the speed and the adrenaline,” he said.

“There’s so much thinking involved. You have to use all of your smarts at the speedway, and think before you get to a situation, keeping an eye on lap traffic and what you’re going to do before you get there.”

Jaxson now has his eyes set on this month’s Speedway Sedans Australia Junior Victorian State Title event.

He will head to Nyora Raceway on Saturday, 29 May, hoping the weather stays reasonably dry. The competition has already been postponed twice in 2021 due to wet weather.

The team at Vella Racing are also seeking support from new sponsors.

“We get other people to fix my car, so having sponsors helps us pay for repairs and new tyres,” Jaxson said.
