IF re-elected to Federal Government on 3 May, the Australian Labor Party will contribute $1.5 million towards upgrades at Don Wallace Recreation Reserve in Teesdale.

Member for Ballarat Catherine King announced last week that the funding would support the design and construction of facilities on site including female friendly changerooms for players and umpires, public toilets with baby changing amenities, a first aid room, cleaning and storage spaces, new septic and storm water systems, upgraded power supply, paths and landscaping, and a sealed carpark.

“More and more women and girls want to stay active and be a part of community sporting clubs and we are making sure they have the facilities that they need and deserve,” Ms King said.

“Both the Victorian Government and Golden Plains Shire have committed funding to the upgrade of Don Wallace Rec Reserve, and now a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will ensure that this brilliant project will be delivered in full for the Teesdale community.

“From the tennis, cricket and football clubs to the primary school, this is a true community facility and its upgrade will be beneficial for so many Teesdale locals.”

Don Wallace Recreation Reserve is not only home to clubs, but is a base for the local primary school’s sports carnivals, and broader community recreation.

Teesdale Cricket Club president Aaron Sawyer said changeroom upgrades are essential.

“We have a women’s team this year so this gives us the opportunity to give them the space they need,” he said.

“With some new rooms and changerooms, that gives us space to conduct events in the pavilion while we have our games on as well.

“We hope new facilities might attract new players, but it’s just so important to have a community hub. We’re a very tight community.”

Golden Plains Shire interim CEO Steve Sagona said the municipality would welcome the commitment.

“We acknowledge the work the community has done with council on planning at the reserve,” he said.
