TEN lambs were sold on Tuesday to raise money for ongoing cancer research.

Mount Mercer grazier Denis Banks collaborated with the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute and HF Richardson Ballarat to sell the lambs at the Ballarat Sale Yards.

Purchasers included Westside Meats from Bacchus Marsh, Midfield Meats from Warrnambool, Beaumont Meats from Ballarat and Herd Meats from Geelong with lamb prices ranging from $580 to $900.

The total amount raised was $8000 which will go towards research programs at FECRI.

Head of FECRI Professor George Kannourakis said the funding is crucial to the institute’s work.

“As a non-government funded research facility, we rely on community donations to continue our important research. It is wonderful people like Denis that make it all possible,” he said.

The institute consists of eight PhD students and 12 senior scientific staff and has made important achievements in bowel cancer and ovarian cancer, a “world first work” linking pregnancy associated plasma protein to triple negative breast cancer.
