Little bears and badges have big impact
SUPPORTING the bereaved families of fallen servicepeople since the early-twentieth century, Legacy continues to offer financial and social assistance to those in their care.
Residents across the region have an opportunity to help those young and old who are part of the Legacy Ballarat community this Legacy Week, Sunday, 28 August to Saturday, 3 September.
Legacy Ballarat members are encouraging people to purchase a bear, badge, or pen with proceeds making a meaningful impact on the loved ones of late veterans.
Local Legacy president Legatee John Morris said the 2022 campaign will be a chance for the club to reconnect with their regular donors and broader community following pandemic restrictions on face-to-face fundraising in the last two-and-a-half years.
Legacy Week merchandise will be on sale at Ballarat Legacy at 5 Raglan Street south, at supermarkets and shopping centres across the district.
“The club maintained its vital work during COVID by distributing flowers to raise spirits, knee rugs and gloves for winter warmth, along with the annual Christmas surprise,” Mr Morris said.
“This was possible through the ongoing support from our compassionate communities. We look forward to re-engaging with our local supporters during Legacy Week.”
Ballarat Legacy was established to raise money to provide work for returned First World War servicepeople.
The Laurel Club community was founded within Ballarat Legacy, which led to the launch of Widows’ Clubs. Ballarat Legacy was the first group to help children of deceased ex-servicepeople.
They launched the first camps for boys of Legacy families and started the girls’ Legacy Club movement.
Ballarat Legacy supports about 450 families of servicepeople, offering home visits, day trips, educational support, and holiday camps for 35 young people.
About 43,000 people within the families of veterans are supported by Legacy in Australia, including younger and older widows, 1300 children, and 1100 dependents with a disability.
