SUPPORTING the bereaved families of fallen servicepeople since the early-twentieth century, Legacy continues to offer financial and social assistance to those in their care.

Residents across the city have an opportunity to help families that are part of the Ballarat Legacy community this Legacy Week, Sunday, 29 August to Saturday, 4 September.

The fundraising theme for 2021 is Little Badge: Big Impact, emphasising that the purchase of something as small as a Legacy badge can have a meaningful impact on the loved ones of late veterans.

Ballarat Legacy president Legatee Jeremy Bannister said the campaign will be less prominent in the community than in previous years due to the pandemic.

As part of Legacy Week, the organisation is selling bears that mark different periods in Australia’s military history.

“Our badge sellers will only be in a limited number of places around Ballarat, so please give generously when you see them,” he said.

“The needs of our families do not stop, so any donation received will be gratefully received and used to provide desperately needed welfare to our children and families.”

COVID conditions pending, badges, pens and Legacy bears will be on sale at shopping centres in Ballarat, Creswick, and further afield. These items will also be available directly from Ballarat Legacy House on Raglan Street South and via the Legacy website.

Ballarat Legacy was established to generate funding to provide work for returned First World War servicepeople.

The Laurel Club community was founded within Ballarat Legacy, which led to the launch of Widows’ Clubs. Ballarat Legacy was the first group to help children of deceased ex-servicepeople.

They launched the first camps for boys of Legacy families, and started the girls’ Legacy Club movement.

Ballarat Legacy cares for 504 families of servicepeople, offering home visits, day trips, educational support, and youth holiday camps.

Approximately 43,000 veterans’ families are supported by Legacy in Australia including younger and older widows, children, and dependents with a disability.
