Linton brigade to host open day
WITH the Linton Townwide Garage Sale expected to bring in visitors to the region this weekend, the local fire brigade will open their doors.
Volunteers with the Linton Fire Brigade will be hosting a station open day this Sunday, which community safety officer Sarah Ross said is about showcasing the group to the community.
“People will be out and about during the townwide garage sale so we thought we’d coincide with that,” she said.
“Traditionally, it’s a recruitment day but we’re using it this time for people to come have a look, to open up the brigade and give the people the opportunity to come and meet the team.
“We’ll have some giveaways, and we’ll be giving some advice on summer preparedness and fire safety, and we can help with fire plans if anyone needs it.”
The brigade currently has 55 members, and 25 active volunteers.
“In terms of recruitment, we’re always looking for new people to take on a role,” Ms Ross said.
“It’s not just operational members we need to turn trucks out, it’s anybody in any capability like radio operations, community, safety.
“There’s lots of different roles that don’t require getting on the back of a truck.”
With the winter season over, Ms Ross said the open day will be an ideal time to connect with community.
“A big goal is to educate the community and help them with being prepared for summer,” she said.
“It’s about them doing their bit and not having to rely on the possibility of trucks coming to save them, to give their properties a fair chance on their own at survival.”
The open day will run from 9am to 2pm at 3053 Glenelg Highway.
