BALLARAT Lyric Theatre wants everyone to hear a little less ‘COVID blah blah’ and a lot more Radio Ga Ga in 2021.

The performing arts company will stage the Queen and Ben Elton’s musical, We Will Rock You from July 15 to 25, bringing live, locally produced blockbuster theatre back to town.

With lead characters Galileo (Montgomery Wilson) and Scaramouche (Vanessa Belsar) striving to save the world through the arts and music, the futuristic story includes many of Queen’s hit songs, and will be brought to life on stage by 46 Ballarat performers.

Director Stephen Armati suggested Lyric produce this musical.

“After the 12 months people have had, they need and deserve a good, fun night out. It’s been a tough time, the arts have helped people get through lockdown, so we ask them to support live theatre, and get us back on track,” he said.

“There are 24 Queen songs in We Will Rock You; quite a comprehensive catalogue. All the main songs are in there, plus a few I wasn’t even aware of.

“Our live band is awesome, and we’re bringing in a very large MCG-sized scoreboard into the theatre to complement the production.”

The creative team also includes Jane Nice, Kristiana Withers and Katherine Armati, alongside the band featuring Lyndon Kriss, Adam Cameron, Jason Hubble, Shane Pearson, Dave Clark, Adrian Liston and Stewart Greedy.

Musical numbers include We Are the Champions, I Want to Break Free, Somebody to Love, Killer Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now, Under Pressure, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Another One Bites the Dust, along with the title song, We Will Rock You.
