More than a little off the sides
WITH the aim of raising some men’s health awareness and cancer research funds, one young boy from Inverleigh decided to shave his long locks as part of Movember.
After ten-year-old Joseph Corcoran’s two great uncles both died from cancer, his father Paul said he had decided to do something to help make a difference.
“He came up with all of this himself, I had just come back from Ireland because I was there for my father’s birthday and my uncle had got sick and passed away,” Mr Corcoran said.
“Fiona [Joseph’s mother] also had an uncle that also died from cancer so he was thinking about that, it was all just fresh in the head for him.
“Everyone’s been getting involved which is great.”
With hair grown down to his shoulders, Joseph was inspired to get involved by others who had done Movember, as well as the
Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.
Although he is the only one of his friends and family doing the shave, Joseph said they’re all incredibly proud of his efforts.
“I just thought because I had grown my hair long I could do something with it,” he said. “Mum’s cutting it so I’m a bit excited and a bit scared to shave it off.
“Friends and family, some family from Ireland and some school teachers as well have donated to the cause and we have raised $3800 so far.”
As proud parents, Mr Corcoran said the community and extended family are all so happy with what Joseph’s achieved.
“We’re going to look into donating his hair, maybe for kid’s cancer wigs or something,” he said.
“We’re hoping to hit the $4000, we’re only about $200 off at this stage.”
