Morning teas will be ‘biggest’ but different

VIRTUAL cuppa catch-ups will be a large part of this year’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea campaign, generating funds for Cancer Council Victoria.

The charity is asking the community to host a morning tea fundraiser within May or June to support, from a distance, those affected by cancer across the state, research work, and prevention programs.

Many years ago, Tegan Stevenson’s mum, Sharon was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumours. Last Year, Ms Stevenson coordinated a Biggest Morning Tea in Ballarat which raised over $5000, and she hopes lots of other people will be inspired host their own events in isolation.

“Everyone’s been touched by cancer in one way or another, so it’s important to get awareness out there for all types and raise as much money as we can for people who are affected by it,” she said.

In the current climate, some community members will be feeling alone. Cancer Council Victoria head of fundraising and communications, Lisa Kastaniotis said those facing treatment for this disease often experience a sense of isolation, and more so now.

“COVID-19 is especially difficult for Australians undergoing cancer treatment, cancer survivors and their families and friends,” she said.

This year’s Biggest Morning Tea campaign offers a chance to get creative and unite in different ways.

“It could be a virtual morning tea with family, friends or colleagues online, a cuppa with those in your household, or you could even raise a mug to your neighbour across the street,” Ms Kastaniotis said.
