A NEW IGA supermarket has been proposed for Inverleigh and a planning application has been lodged with the Golden Plains Shire Council’s planning department.

The proposal is for a small-format supermarket and ancillary retail shops at 24 High Street.

The proposed development would “support local employment and provide more shopping options for local families in Inverleigh”.

The timeframe for public notice display of the proposal ends on Tuesday 27 January, but submissions responding to the application can be lodged with the council up until a decision is made, a Golden Plains Shire spokesperson confirmed.

“The application is currently on advertising and referral to external authorities and internal departments,” the spokesperson said.

Shire officers have authority to make a decision on the proposal unless councillors want to consider it at a meeting. The next ordinary council meeting is scheduled for 24 February.

“Once advertising is completed, officers will review the submissions and referral responses, including seeking further information should any agencies require it.

“Officers have delegation to determine the application unless councillors request to have the application forwarded to an ordinary meeting of council for a decision.”

The proposal in its current form would see some trees in the immediate area removed while others could be retained depending on permit conditions that may be imposed as part of the planning process. The small-format supermarket would front High Street, with vehicle access proposed via Dundas Street.

Accessible entry points are planned on both frontages, along with new footpaths along High and Dundas streets.

The Golden Plains Shire Council’s first ordinary meeting for the year is scheduled for Tuesday 24 February.
