Night tennis comp back on court
MEREDITH Tennis Club’s nightly seasonal competition is set to return next month with applications open until the end of January.
The six-week social doubles competition will run weekly from Thursday 8 February.
Now nearing its fourth iteration since its establishment in autumn last year, club president Madeline McColl said the aim of the quarterly tournament is to bolster junior player participation.
“It’s encouraging adults to play with their children to help develop the juniors’ tennis skills,” she said. “We find they start thinking about the placement of the ball rather than just hitting it back.
“We have seven junior teams so about 35 kids and pretty much all the kids that play in the comp play Saturday tennis too.”
The club also has two seniors teams, one of which was established through parents’ participation in the seasonal competitions.
Dinner will be available on the night at a cost of $10 per person.
Ms McColl said the nightly tennis competition has grown in popularity.
“The first time we did it, we had 20 teams of two and last time we had 30 teams of two,” she said.
“It’s definitely achieved what we’ve set out to do. With some of our juniors, we’ve seen a drastic change in their game and we’ve had a lot of parents take up the sport again as a result of this.”
Meredith Tennis Club’s summer competition will cost a one-off $30 fee per one junior and one adult player.
