On track for youth fun
THE creation of a pump track in Haddon has recently received state government funding after a pair of students advocated for the facility.
As part of the 26/27 Victorian budget, $200,000 was announced for the community amenity.
The pump track would provide a purpose-built recreation space for bikes, skateboards and scooters. It is expected to cater for a range of ages as well as skill levels.
“This is all about giving Haddon kids a safe, fun and active place to come together, close to home,” Ripon MP Martha Haylett said.
“This will be a fantastic asset for Haddon and something local families can enjoy for years to come.”
Local students Bailey and Murphy began championing the idea while at Haddon Primary School.
They launched a petition supporting the project which received about 250 signatures from residents.
Now in year 9, the pair continue to advocate for more recreational opportunities for the town’s young people.
“The push for this pump track came directly from local kids and families who wanted more things for young people to do in Haddon,” Haylett said.
“Bailey and Murphy should be incredibly proud of themselves. Their advocacy, leadership, and determination played a huge role in helping secure this funding.”
A spokesperson for Golden Plains Shire Council said: “Council welcomes the funding announcement for the Haddon pump track and looks forward to working closely with the state government and community to help progress this exciting project.”
How the shire will financially support the project is to be confirmed.
For Ripon, the budget also had $161,000 to upgrade the Out of School Hours Care facility at Miners Rest Primary School, and funding for the Kingston Fire Brigade to receive a new modern station.
