RESIDENTS across Golden Plains will have the chance to try their hand at new sport and recreation activities at a series of community expos starting next month.
The Golden Plains Shire will host the free Active Golden Plains Sport and Rec Fest in Smythesdale in February, followed by Bannockburn in March, promoting a range of activities offered by local organisations.
Mayor Owen Sharkey said the events were designed to highlight the health and social benefits of getting involved in sport, recreation and community groups.
He said the expos would give residents the opportunity to see what activities might suit their interests and lifestyles.
“Sport, recreation and community activities are more than just fun – they’re essential for a healthy, connected community,” Cr Sharkey said. “They help improve physical and mental wellbeing, create opportunities for social connection and foster a sense of belonging.”

Despite everyday commitments, he said, people still wish to participate in community activities.
“You’ve got young families, ageing parents, you’re busy and you just want to find something,” he said. “So it’s really important for community members to be engaged with things like this.”
He said the Rec Fest would also give local clubs and groups a valuable chance to connect with potential new members.
More than 20 groups will be present at both events, representing activities including football, dance, basketball, fishing, gyms and tennis.
The Smythesdale Rec Fest will be held on Saturday 21 February, from 10am to 1pm at the Woady Yaloak Recreation Reserve.
The Bannockburn event will follow on Saturday 14 March, from 10am to 1pm at the Recreation Precinct Soccer Pavilion.
