A LARGE crowd enjoyed a day of competition, laughter and fun at the Slownet Yacht Race in Cape Clear this month.

Patrons took part in the notable town tradition at Cape Clear Recreation Reserve on Saturday 14 March.

Evelyn Cannon, president of event organisers the Cape Clear, Illabrook and Rokewood Junction Community Committee, believed the crowd number warranted the return of the event after a six-year absence.

“There was about 120 people, higher than we expected due to fuel prices and being the first one back,” she said. “I think it shows that the community wanted to see it’s return.”

In the spirit of its European fastnet counterpart, competitors ran around the reserve in special crafts made for the event.

Mrs Cannon said there was plenty of fun to be had.

Some of the boats made for Cape Clear’s Slownet Yacht Race.

“People seemed to really enjoy themselves,” she said. “The observers seemed to have a really good time, and the participants did amazingly.”

She said the soccer match, which was organised as part of a club the committee is starting, was an outstanding part of the event that attracted players young and old.

“The soccer game was a real highlight, we had four years old up to 72,” she said “There was passion and energy and many, many laughs.”

Mrs Cannon said the committee was pleased to organise something locals could embrace.

“The committee enjoys being able to offer something for our community and see people having a great time,” she said.

She said the organisation now turned its attention to hosting a movie afternoon on 11 April and an upgrade of its community garden on 18 April.
