FOLLOWING the launch of Golden Plains Shire’s monthly glass recycling collection, residents are reminded to remove lids before placing items into the purple lidded bin.
Lids and glass cannot be recycled together and removing them prevents contamination.
Metal or plastic lids bigger than a credit card can be placed in the yellow recycling bin while small plastic lids go in the general waste bin.
“Early bin survey information for collected glass shows that lids on glass bottles and jars are the most common contaminate,” a Golden Plains Shire spokesperson said.
“Lids are made of different materials (plastic or metal), so they contaminate the recycled glass and therefore impact the quality of the material.
“Lids can also disrupt the recycling process at the recycling facility where recycled glass gets sorted.”
Golden Plains Shire’s glass recycling contractor has reported low levels of contamination across most areas. For more information, access Golden Plains Shire’s waste sorting guide at bit.ly/4dfGKc5 .
