Return event to bring social song and dance

A POPULAR event is set to return to Cape Clear next weekend with the aim of giving everyone an evening of family fun and dancing.

Held last year for the first time, members of the Cape Clear Recreation Reserve and Hall committee are bringing back their Valentine’s Day bush dance on Saturday 10 February.

Taking place at the recreation reserve and with music provided by returning act Duck ‘n’ Weave, committee chair Evelyn Cannon will offer a mix between a dancing class and live entertainment.

“They’ll will play their music while the caller is teaching the dance moves to everyone, and then there’ll be music playing in the background for people to enjoy and chat around,” she said.

“Once they’ve learned their dance parts, Duck ‘n’ Weave will play the songs for them and they can dance to that and everyone will come and watch, so you have this lovely blend of a social event.”

As well as the main dancing event, the event will also feature a barbecue dinner, as well as a silent auction and coin toss with a cake prize up for grabs for the latter.

Funds raised from the event will go towards venue maintenance as well as future events and workshops from the sites’ committee.

The next two Valentine’s Day bush dances are being supported with more than $10,000 in grant money through the Berrybank Wind Farm.

Ms Cannon said the committee was overwhelmed with how last year’s event was received.

“We ended up with over 150 people there, so it was absolutely beyond belief,” she said.

“We would have live music at our bonfire event but we’d had a lot of people had been asking about doing the dancing as well so that’s why we put this on last year and it’s gone from there.”

The event will run from 5pm with entry costing a gold coin donation while children enter free.
